Prairie Falcon—photos and links

{still under construction}

Prairie Falcons are often heard long before they are heard, especially on breeding grounds:  Their dull colors help them to blend into the cliff walls that they often nest on, but their courtship calls are often loud and frequent.  You can hear examples of these calls here.

Julie Belt, a new citizen of Coaldale,spotted this juvenile Prairie Falcon at the Cañon City Western gas station.  You can tell it’s a juvenile because of the heavy streaking.  Her sighting—and asking us on Facebook what bird it was—prompted us to choose the Prairie Falcon for this month’s bird!
